History

The Shady Dell Vintage Trailer Court has a rich history that dates back to 1927. Originally, it served as a camping ground for travelers journeying along the iconic Highway 80, which stretched from Savannah, Georgia, to San Diego, California.

Over the years, it has transformed into a vintage monument, offering a nostalgic experience to its visitors. The property has seen several changes, including the addition of nine vintage trailers for overnight stays. Among these are a 1949 Airstream, a 1950 Spartan Manor, and a 1951 33-foot Royal Mansion, each meticulously restored to offer a trip down memory lane.

Location

Situated in the Mule Mountains of Bisbee, Arizona, a historic copper mining town, The Shady Dell is more than just a place to rest. It's a mile high up, offering a unique setting that adds to its allure. The address is 1 Douglas Road, Bisbee, AZ, United States.

Importance to Bisbee

The Shady Dell has evolved into a significant tourist attraction, not just for trailer enthusiasts but also for those looking for a unique lodging experience. The trailers are equipped with modern amenities like coffee makers, bottled water, and even old televisions and VCRs stocked with classic movies. The property has been under the ownership of Justin Luria for the past decade, who has made minor renovations while maintaining its vintage charm. It has become a part of Bisbee's cultural and historical landscape, attracting visitors young and old.

Dot Bozeman and Dot's Diner

Dot's Diner, a fixture at The Shady Dell, adds another layer to its rich history. Originally built in Kansas in 1957, the diner was discovered decaying in someone's backyard in Los Angeles by Ed Smith, the Dell's original owner. After restoring it, he and his partner, Rita Personett, convinced a local cook named Dot Bozeman to run the diner, naming it in her honor. Although the diner had to close for a period, it has been revived and now serves breakfast, lunch, and sweet treats under bright red and white umbrellas.

Current Offerings

Today, The Shady Dell is a blend of practicality and vintage fun. It offers an experience akin to "sleeping in a living museum," as described by its current owner. The trailers are available for overnight stays, and are often booked months in advance. The property also hosts outdoor live bands, and movie viewings, adding to its appeal.

In summary, The Shady Dell is not just a place to stay; it's a living testament to a bygone era, offering a unique, nostalgic experience that has made it an integral part of Bisbee's cultural and historical fabric.
